Safe Haven Project

Children are often times forced to remain in violent situations because of the lack of emergency placement available to them. For children taken into custody on an emergency basis, our receiving home may be the most appropriate environment until a comprehensive assessment of the child can be completed. With our Safe Haven Project, we aim to give children a safe transitional home in the midst of a chaotic situation. WBD will provide food, clothing, a warm bed, and medical attention to children in the following situations

  • The child is homeless
  • The child would suffer serious permanent physical or emotional harm if not placed immediately
  • There is no possibility of making temporary arrangements with relatives, neighbors, or friends

OUR PROJECTS

We focus on realizing the full potential of at-risk
children to help them achieve their dreams, despite the hardships they face everyday.

Below is a list of projects WBD has designed to help children navigate effectively through the child welfare system and ultimately through life.

HOW WE DO IT

KEEP Safe PROGRAM

In an effort to ensure the long term safety of children in the foster care system, we will provide support to caseworkers as well as foster families and children. Properly trained and qualified staff will work closely with child welfare services to conduct the following actions.

  • Provide care packages to children in receiving and foster homes (Precious Cargo Project)
  • Visit schools and hospitals on behalf of social workers
  • Supply overwhelmed caseworkers with caseload assistance
  • Offer support to foster families getting to and from court and hospital appointments

a SCHOLAR AND A FRIEND

Foster children encounter different educational difficulties once placed in foster care. Because of the lack of permanency and stability in their lives, foster children are forced to transfer from school to school, often losing credits and falling behind in their studies. WBD is motivated to giving foster children and youth equal opportunities in education by performing the following actions.

  • Provide tutoring programs for subjects K-12 developed by experienced staff
  • Conduct SAT and ACT training classes
  • Mentor children and youth for personal and educational issues

ON MY OWN INITIATIVE

The foster care system is legally responsible for children until the age of 18. However, many of the youth who are phasing out of the system still need support and guidance adjusting to living on their own. WBD's On My Own Initiative is structured to assist the "Phasing Outers" with life after foster care. By equipping youth with the tools to be self-supporting citizens of society, WBD hopes that each individual will be prepared to seize any opportunity life presents. With the following activities, WBD will provide comprehensive support to youth phasing out of the foster care system.
  • Conduct training classes on important life lessons such as banking, paying bills, budgeting and much more
  • Provide support on how to build a resume, obtain a job, and secure internship opportunities
  • Find financial aid and scholarships for college and assist in the college application process
  • Present viable and affordable options for secure living arrangements

PRECIOUS CARGO Project

We Become the Dream has started the first big project that will provide support to children and youth entering the foster care system. These kids are usually given two trash bags to move their belongings. With your donations and support, we will be able to provide our children with duffel bags filled with extra clothing, food, shoes, school supplies, and more.
